Banknotes Ordinal Collection

A permanent numismatic archive on Bitcoin
Preserving the history of money—one banknote, one nation and one generation at a time.

Banknotes is a global numismatic archive of 2,000 banknotes from more than 100 countries. Each piece represents a real chapter in monetary history, documented in high resolution and preserved permanently through Bitcoin Ordinals so that its visual and historical record can remain accessible far beyond the lifetime of the physical paper.

A banknote is never only a means of payment. It is a document issued by a nation to represent itself. Portraits reveal who was celebrated; monuments and landscapes show what a country chose to remember; denominations record inflation, reform and economic change; languages, signatures, seals and security features reveal political authority and technological progress. Even folds, stains and signs of circulation preserve evidence of the millions of hands through which money once passed.

FROM PHYSICAL NOTE TO PERMANENT RECORD
Every archival image begins with a physical object. Depending on the condition, material and availability of each banknote, we use original photography or high-resolution scanning to create the clearest and most faithful record possible.
Our team photographing a physical Cook Islands banknote

ORIGINAL DOCUMENTATION

This photograph shows part of the real documentation process carried out for the archive. Some banknotes were physically positioned and photographed directly by us, one by one. Controlled lighting, careful framing and close visual inspection help preserve the true appearance of the paper, ink, texture, dimensions and condition of each surviving piece—including folds, stains, wear and small imperfections that are themselves part of the note's history.

Camera used to document physical banknotes from the collection

BEHIND THE ARCHIVE

This image is not a scan. It documents the photographic equipment and part of the physical collection used during the creation of the archive. It represents the work behind every digital record: finding the banknotes, handling them carefully, preparing the surface, choosing the best capture method, reviewing the result and organizing the material before it can become part of a permanent numismatic collection.

Photography, scanning and archival quality

The method was not identical for every banknote. Some pieces were photographed by us from physical specimens, while others were digitized through high-resolution, high-DPI scans when scanning provided the clearest and most faithful result. DPI means the number of dots captured per inch: a higher DPI can preserve much finer details than an ordinary image, including engraved lines, microprinting, signatures, serial numbers, security patterns and subtle variations in ink.

The purpose is not to claim that every image came from a single machine or from the same process. The purpose is to preserve the best available visual record of every note. Photography can reveal texture, relief, natural wear and the physical presence of the object. Scanning can provide a flat, evenly illuminated and extremely detailed reproduction. Both methods serve the same archival mission: recording the banknote as faithfully as possible before time, damage or disappearance makes that record impossible to recover.

Physical banknotes are fragile. Paper deteriorates; inks fade; humidity, fire, conflict and careless handling can erase surviving examples. Rare issues may disappear into closed collections, while entire monetary systems can be forgotten after political or economic change. By documenting these pieces and inscribing their records on Bitcoin, Banknotes transforms vulnerable physical evidence into a permanent, verifiable and globally accessible numismatic archive—independent of a single museum, company, database or external server.

Why this archive matters

Money tells the story of civilization.

Future generations should be able to study not only what people used as money, but what that money said about them. Banknotes were present in markets, homes, migrations, wars, periods of prosperity and moments of economic collapse. They passed between people from every part of society and became silent witnesses to ordinary life. When a currency is replaced or a country changes, these pieces of paper often become some of the clearest surviving records of the world that existed before.

Every element printed on a banknote was selected for a reason. Portraits reveal the figures a nation wanted to honor. Buildings, landscapes, animals and works of art reveal the places and symbols connected to its identity. Languages, coats of arms, signatures, dates and seals record changes in government and authority. Denominations reveal inflation, monetary reforms and economic crises, while printing methods and security features demonstrate the technological capabilities of their time. To preserve a banknote is therefore to preserve many histories at once: artistic, political, social, economic and technological.

As a numismatic archive, Banknotes brings these individual objects together so they can be understood as part of a much larger human story. A single note may document one year or one country, but 2,000 notes from more than 100 countries create a global visual timeline of money. The collection allows designs, denominations, eras and national identities to be compared across borders. It can serve collectors searching for specific issues, researchers studying monetary change, educators introducing students to history and anyone curious about how civilizations chose to represent value.

This work is especially important because physical preservation alone is never guaranteed. Paper can tear, burn, fade, absorb moisture or simply disappear. Collections can be divided, records can be lost and centralized websites can close. Preserving the visual record through Bitcoin Ordinals gives each archived piece permanent provenance and removes dependence on a single institution or server. The physical note may continue to age, but its documented image and place within the collection can remain verifiable and accessible to people around the world.

The greatest value of this archive may not be measured only by what it represents today, but by what it can teach tomorrow. Decades or centuries from now, people should still be able to encounter the faces, symbols, ambitions and economic realities printed on the money of our era and the eras that came before it. Banknotes is an effort to carry that knowledge forward—to ensure that the history of money does not vanish when the paper does.

NUMISMATIC RESEARCHA structured visual reference for collectors, historians, educators and researchers studying denominations, issuers, designs and monetary transitions.
CULTURAL MEMORYA record of portraits, languages, architecture, wildlife, symbols and national identity that might otherwise disappear with the physical object.
FUTURE GENERATIONSA permanent public inheritance that allows people decades or centuries from now to encounter the monetary history of our world.
READING THE BANKNOTES ARCHIVE

What each banknote can reveal

Every entry is more than an image. The archive connects identification, visual subjects, monetary context and on-chain provenance so that a note can be examined as a historical object rather than only as a collectible.

Identity and monetary context

Country, denomination and year establish where the note belongs in monetary history. Together they help identify changes of currency, national transitions, redenominations, inflationary periods and the lifespan of an issue.

Recorded banknote types

The Explorer uses only issue types found in the collection data. These categories distinguish ordinary circulating money from notes created for a specific historical or institutional purpose.

Standard CirculationCommemorativeLocalUnissuedNon-circulating

Portraits and people

Recorded portraits identify rulers, presidents, independence leaders, writers, scientists, artists, workers and symbolic figures. They reveal who an issuer chose to place at the center of national memory.

Animals and natural heritage

Recorded animals connect banknotes to biodiversity, national emblems, local landscapes and cultural symbolism. The attribute follows the subjects documented for the note instead of adding animals that are not present in its record.

Front and reverse

The two sides often tell different halves of the same story. The front may establish authority through portraits, seals and issuer names, while the reverse can preserve architecture, industry, wildlife, art or important places.

Inscription and provenance

The inscription ID connects the archived piece to its Bitcoin Ordinals record. This provides a verifiable identity for the item and allows its place in the collection to be checked independently on Bitcoin.

Four histories inside one banknote

A single note can be read from several directions at once. Comparing these layers across the collection turns individual pieces into a broad visual history of money.

Political historyIssuers, rulers, republics, emblems, borders and changes of authority.
Economic historyDenominations, inflation, currency reform, emergency issues and changing systems of value.
Cultural historyLanguages, portraits, monuments, clothing, landscapes, animals and artistic styles.
Printing historyPaper or polymer, engraving, signatures, serials, security patterns and anti-counterfeit technology.

ABOUT THE CATALOGUE: Attributes describe what is currently recorded for each banknote. When a portrait, animal or other field is unavailable, the interface reports that it is not recorded instead of inventing information. The archive can become more complete as reliable documentation is reviewed.
THE ARCHIVE IN DETAIL

A global record built for comparison

The collection brings together monetary objects that were never originally designed to be seen side by side. Reading them as one archive makes it possible to follow changing borders, currencies, public figures, natural symbols, printing methods and ideas of national identity across different periods of history.

The historical life of a banknote

Designed and issuedAn issuing authority selects value, symbols, language, signatures, materials and security features.
Used in circulationThe note passes through daily life and may acquire folds, marks, stains or other physical evidence of use.
Replaced or withdrawnInflation, political change, redesign, redenomination or a new currency can end the note's monetary role.
Collected and studiedOnce removed from circulation, the object can become evidence for numismatic, historical and cultural research.
Documented permanentlyPhotography or scanning records the surviving object before its archived identity is connected to Bitcoin.

The issue types actually recorded in this collection

Standard CirculationNotes intended for ordinary public use as part of the regular monetary system.
CommemorativeIssues created to mark a person, event, anniversary or historically significant subject.

Non-circulatingNotes produced as collectible or commemorative issues rather than for ordinary day-to-day circulation.
UnissuedPrepared or produced notes that were not released into ordinary public circulation.

Portraits and animals as a visual index

These attributes are not decorative filters alone. They allow the archive to be reorganized around people and nature, revealing which subjects recur across countries and which appear only in a small historical context.

Portrait index

Portraits can connect notes across different denominations and years while recording political authority, national memory, literature, science, independence movements and everyday society.

Archive questions

Why preserve both sides? The obverse and reverse often carry different subjects. Studying only one side can remove half of the note's visual and historical meaning.
What does “None recorded” mean?It means the catalogue currently has no confirmed value for that field. It does not claim that the subject can never be present.
Why record physical wear?Folds, stains and circulation marks distinguish a surviving historical object from an idealized design reproduction.
Can one note contain several subjects?Yes. A banknote may include multiple portraits, animals, monuments, seals, landscapes or symbolic figures across its two sides.
What can countries be compared by?Researchers can compare denominations, dates, imagery, languages, types, materials, political figures and recurring natural symbols.
Why connect the archive to Bitcoin? The inscription supplies a persistent, verifiable identity that does not depend only on the design or database of this interface.
A HOLDER-BUILT ON-CHAIN LANDMARK

The story of the Bathroom Wall

The Bathroom Wall was the first collaborative experiment created by BANKNOTES holders. Instead of presenting a finished work, the project opened one shared wall and invited the community to leave its own marks. Piece by piece, 300 individual drawings became one collective artwork: unpredictable, personal and built by the people who were there.

Every one of the 300 pieces was inscribed on Bitcoin and airdropped to its participating holder. More than 20 pieces were placed on rare sats, connecting the spontaneous character of the drawings with permanent on-chain provenance. What began as a temporary digital gathering therefore became a record that can continue beyond the interface where it was created.

The Bathroom Wall Monument

The monument reunites the completed wall as a single collective landmark. It does not replace the 300 individual pieces; it preserves the memory of how they came together, allowing the community's marks to be encountered again as one composition and one chapter in BANKNOTES history.

COMMUNITY-GUIDED EXPANSION

From 100+ countries to every country

The first 2,000 inscriptions established the foundation. Our long-term ambition is to expand BANKNOTES into the largest verified digital banknote archive in the world, representing every country and preserving national, regional and local monetary histories that are still missing.

01

A truly global catalogue

Coverage is the mission, not only scale. The archive aims to document every country with reliable identification, front and reverse imagery, historical context and permanent on-chain provenance.

02

An active community vote

One current holder vote asks whether BANKNOTES should add the remaining missing countries and pursue the largest numismatic banknote archive on the planet. The result helps determine whether global expansion becomes a formal priority.

03

The community shapes BANKNOTES

BANKNOTES is not designed as a finished project handed to its holders. Votes, research, corrections, proposals, artwork and participation help decide what is built, which histories are added and how the archive evolves.

WHAT IS BEING DECIDED NOW? Alongside country expansion, the Voting area includes decisions about new attributes, Interactive Gallery priorities, holder rewards, the Bathroom Wall, a possible community token and how much future direction should be decided by holder voting. Active proposals remain open for 11 days.
